Happy birthday to you

Happy birthday to you

Happy birthday dear Daddy/Shane/Honey

Happy birthday to YOU!!!

Hope you have a great day!  We love you!

Things we love about Shane:

1.  He's a GREAT Daddy-o.  He LOVES playing with Kaydee and Abby (and the feeling is mutual).  He takes them outside to play when Mommy thinks it's too cold (Mommy is a big wimp when it comes to the cold).  He chases them around the house and plays cars and trains with Kaydee.  He even got up with Abby several time while we were in Utah to help her get back to sleep.  (If only she WOULD sleep.....)

2.  Shane is handy to have around.   He can fix anything.  Cars, computers, phones, sheds.....Shane's a good guy to know.

3.  Shane is a good cook.  Limited though the menu may be, when Shane cooks, it's delicious.  He's even smoking some ribs for his birthday dinner...yummy!!

4.  Shane is generous and kind.  He's always willing to help others.

5.   Shane is funny.   Just the other day he told me he's going to buy a motorcycle.  I couldn't stop laughing for an hour! ;)

Happy Birthday, Honey!!

General News

We're back from our trip to Utah!  Despite having colds and Abby not sleeping AT ALL we had a great time.  Cody picked us up at the airport (THANK YOU!) and Dorothee drove us on down to Hinckley.  Virginia came for the weekend--we had fun playing games and talking and eating treats.  The girls had fun playing with Greema and PopPop.  They especially loved dancing in the kitchen to ABBA.  I got some good videos of Dorothee and Kaydee dancing and singing along with Mama Mia!  (Good blackmail material for later.)  I'll see if Shane can help me upload the video...in the meantime if you want to see it I'll have to e-mail it to you.  (It's worth viewing, I'll tell you that much).

I had fun playing lots of games with Dorothee, Virginia, Mom, Shane, and Kaydee.  Kaydee is an expert Sorry! player--she won every game she played.  No cheating......in fact, we Sorry!'d her every chance we got!!! She'd just say, "That's okay---I'll get you next time."  And she did, of course.

There was even snow for Kaydee.  She was sad that there wasn't really enough for a snowman, but she had a great time running around and jumping and making tracks.  Abby thought it was cold and slippery and not nearly as much fun as Kaydee told her it was.

Thank you Dorothee & Cody for rearranging your schedules so you could get us to/from the airport---you are the B*E*S*T!!!!

Here's a picture of Dorothee & Kaydee during one of their singing/dancing sessions:  (there are more in the media gallery for Jan)

Kaydee's birthday continues....

Kaydee's News

After dealing with a fever of 104 + for 3 days, Kaydee finally got her hands on some medication for her ear infections and was back at school today.  (She was soooooooooooooooooo mad that she didn't get to go yesterday!!!!!!!)  Since her birthday was during Christmas Break she got to have her birthday celebration today in Miss Lisa's preschool class.   She served cupcakes, pretzels, & apple juice to her friends.  It was so exciting for her to have Mommy and Abby come to her class---and Abby didn't know what to do with all the attention she was given!!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, KAYDEE!!!

[img:20090102203726604 width:0 height:0 align:auto link:1 alt:0]

Kaydee turned FIVE today!  We had a super fun day.  She wanted to have a "Christmas Birthday" (which is why the Christmas decorations are still up at our house).  So she opened her presents under the tree this morning.  She got card games from Aunt GinGin, Magic Treehouse Books from Greema & PopPop, a Tinkerbell costume & Narnia popup book from Meema & Pap, and shopping money from Mommy, Daddy, & Abby.   We decided that since her birthday is so close to Christmas we'd take her shopping and let her pick out something she wanted that she didn't get for Christmas.  So we headed to the Mall of GA and went to Kaydee's all time favorite store:  The Princess Store (aka Disney Store).  She looked at everything in the store (twice) and then settled on a princess night gown, a King car (from Cars) and a soccer ball for Abby.  (Always thinking of her baby sister.)  Then we went to Jump For Joy and the girls had a BLAST.  Abby L*O*V*E*D the 20ft slide---the three of us went down together at least 20 times.  (This was a sacrifice for me since it scared me to death!  My 5 yr old and 16 month old were fearless, while I cringed every time we went down!)

We had lunch at McDonalds (let Kaydee choose and it will be chicken nuggets every time).  Then I let her watch cartoons all afternoon--something she never gets to do.  We had pizza for supper--she wanted to go out until I told her she'd have to take her nightgown off and put real clothes back on.  Then she decided that she'd rather order in.

We had "dinner & a movie" and watched the Santa Claus (to continue our "Christmas Birthday" theme).  Then we had an Enchanted chocolate cake...yum!  Tonight she gets to have a slumber party in Mommy & Daddy's bed.

My top 5 for Kaydee's 5th birthday:

1. Kaydee is secretly older than 5.  She is actually 5 going on 30.  She is truly wise beyond her years.  She is so compassionate and kind.  She loves school and learning--she was sooo upset that she didn't get to go for the past 2 weeks!  She loves to dote on her baby sister and is Abby's second mom. She is a huge help with chores--from laundry to mopping the floors.  She is just growing up right before my eyes and it breaks my heart a little bit to see her act so maturely sometimes.

2.  Kaydee is funny.  She is always telling the funniest stories.  Most of them involve her imaginary friend Mickymouse--who always seems to be getting into (and then out of) some kind of pickle.  She loves to laugh and make other people laugh.

3.  Kaydee is friendly. This kid has more friends than anyone I know.  She makes friends with everyone she meets.  She is friendly and outgoing and sweet and good and kind and I think it just draws people to her.  She is "best friends" with her entire preschool class.  She loves everyone--a great example to me!

4.  Kaydee is athletic.  She is my super soccer girl.  She LOVES soccer.  Enough that she even bought Abby a soccer ball today so that they can play together.  She dribbles a small bouncy ball around the house daily--she dribbles it to her room to put her clothes away on laundry day, she dribbles it through the kitchen to set the table.......

5. Kaydee is beautiful.  Inside and out, Kaydee is one of the most beautiful people I know.  She has a heart of gold which shows in everything she does.   I admire her so much for her sweet spirit.  I LOVE YOU, BUGG!!!!

Merry Christmas to YOU!!

General News

Merry Merry Christmas everyone!!  We've had a great day (See the photo gallery).  Kaydee could hardly sleep last night from excitement.  She told me that she was so excited that her heart was going to beat through her chest.  She woke up at 3am and didn't really go back to sleep.  She was super excited about the note Santa left her, and both girls had fun tearing into their gifts.  Abby's favorite part was removing the bows and tags.  She stuck most of the tags to her pjs (or to Kaydee). We got to talk to family on the phone and wish everyone a happy day.  It was 70 degrees outsie so we spent part of the afternoon on the swings and playhouse and playing soccer outside.   The girls seem happy with their loot---Kaydee didn't want to stop playing to go to bed.

Hope you all had as wonderful a day as we did!! :)

What I Do All Day

General News

I've had some conversations recently about what I "do".   I was asked by a mom in Kaydee's class what I "do" and I told her I'm lucky enough to stay home with my girls.  She wanted to know what I do all day to keep busy.  I wanted to laugh in her face.  Her kids are at school or day care every day and I found out her mother in law often watches her kids on weekends.  It was painfully obvious that she had no idea what motherhood entails.  So for anyone who doesn't know what I "do"---please read the following from the Washington Post May 2007:

Dear Carolyn: Best friend has child. Her: exhausted, busy, no time for self, no time for me, etc. Me (no kids): What'd you do today? Her: Park, play group ...

OK. I've talked to parents. I don't get it. What do stay-at-home moms do all day? Please no lists of library, grocery store, dry cleaners ... I do all those things, too. I guess what I'm asking is: What is a typical day and why don't moms have time for a call or e-mail? I work and am away from home nine hours a day (plus a few late work events); I manage to get it all done. I'm feeling like the kid is an excuse to relax and enjoy, but if so, why won't my friend tell me the truth? Is this a contest ("my life is so much harder than yours")? What's the deal? I've got friends with and without kids and all us child-free folks have the same questions.

— Tacoma, Wash.

Dear Tacoma: Relax and enjoy. You're funny.

Or, you're lying about having friends with kids.

Or you're taking them at their word that they actually have kids, because you haven't personally been in the same room with them.

I keep wavering between giving you a straight answer and giving my forehead some keyboard. To claim you want to understand, while in the same breath implying that the only logical conclusions are that your mom-friends are either lying or competing with you, is disingenuous indeed.

So, because it's validation you seem to want, the real answer is what you get. When you have young kids, your typical day is: constant attention, from getting them out of bed, fed, cleaned, dressed; to keeping them out of harm's way; to answering their coos, cries, questions; to having two arms and carrying one kid, one set of car keys, and supplies for even the quickest trips, including the latest-to-be-declared-essential piece of molded plastic gear; to keeping them from unshelving books at the library; to enforcing rest times; to staying one step ahead of them lest they get too hungry, tired or bored, any one of which produces checkout-line screaming.

It's needing 45 minutes to do what takes others 15.

It's constant vigilance, constant touch, constant use of your voice, constant relegation of your needs to the second tier.

It's constant scrutiny and second-guessing from family and friends. It's resisting constant temptation to seek short-term relief at everyone's long-term expense.

It's doing all this while concurrently teaching virtually everything — language, manners, safety, resourcefulness, discipline, curiosity, creativity. Empathy. Everything.

It's also a choice, yes. And a joy. But if you spent all day, every day, with this brand of joy, and then, when you got your first 10 minutes to yourself, wanted to be alone with your thoughts instead of calling a good friend, a good friend wouldn't judge you, complain about you or marvel how much more productively she uses her time. Either make a sincere effort to understand, or keep your snit to yourself.

Three Legged Cat

Kaydee's News

This is how Kaydee occupied herself yesterday while I worked on primary stuff on the computer:  She created a 3 legged cat---all by herself, using tape, scrap paper, and scissors.....I thought she did a pretty good job!  When I asked her why the cat only had 3 legs she said, "Because that's how I wanted him!"  CLICK HERE FOR PICTURE

Happy Holidays!!

General News

The Holidays have officially arrived!! WOOOHOOOO!!!!

We spent a week at Meema and Pap's house.  Kaydee got to eat at her favorite restaurant (Polky Dot's) and even got the snow she's been dreaming about.  Abby managed to explore every cupboard, shelf, closet, box and basket she could find.  One night the girls put a blanket on the floor of the rec room and had a "slumber party"--only they just played, didn't even come close to sleeping!

We had a fun Thanksgiving at Gammie's house with Meema, Pap, Gammie, Babu, Joe, Barbara, Jacob & Caleb.  Kaydee and Abby had fun playing with Jacob and Caleb---Caleb even helped Abby color.  It was really sweet. We also got to see Grandma Sara while we were in Ohio.

Kaydee also insisted she help Meema put up the Christmas tree before we left, so Pap hauled out the Christmas decorations and Kaydee and Abby decorated the tree.  After Abby almost choked on a small ornament (and refused to leave ANYTHING on the tree) we decided that our own tree would be a snow flake tree this year.

There are lots of cute pics (including our snowflake tree) in the November Media Gallery!

Come Follow Me...

Kaydee's News

Tonight's family scripture study was the story  in Matthew of Jesus Christ instructing  His Apostles to  “[Come,] follow me, and I will make you fishers of men” (Matt 4:19).  I told Kaydee how Simon Peter and Andrew left their nets and followed.  Then (as is typical in our house) I broke into song: "Come follow me..."  and Kaydee inserted: "....and leave all your stuff..."

Something To Think About

"I love all children but it distresses me when I see a child who has a disease like Selfishness or Answerbackism or Wont-Put-Away-Toys-itis and his parents don't do a thing to cure him." (Mrs Piggle-Wiggle)
